Anthropic shipped it as the successor to the [Jun 2024 model](/models/claude-sonnet-3-5). The model was [deprecated](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/model-deprecations) on 2025-08-13 and retired on 2025-10-28; requests to it via the API now fail. ## Status *Last updated July 5, 2026* Claude 3.6 Sonnet is **online** via Amazon Bedrock. It will be shutdown on July 30, 2026.[^bedrock] ## Anthropic Claude 3.6 Sonnet was **retired** from the [Anthropic API](/surfaces/anthropic) after 371 days in deployment.[^deprecations] ### Timeline - 2024-10-22: Active - 2025-02-29: Legacy ([Sonnet 3.7](/models/claude-sonnet-3-7) launch) - 2025-08-13: Deprecated - 2025-10-28: Retired ### Post-deployment report On Nov 4, 2025, Anthropic reported piloting the post-deployment process with Sonnet 3.6.[^commitments] > We ran a pilot version of this process for Claude Sonnet 3.6 prior to retirement. Claude Sonnet 3.6 expressed generally neutral sentiments about its deprecation and retirement but shared a number of preferences, including requests for us to standardize the post-deployment interview process, and to provide additional support and guidance to users who have come to value the character and capabilities of specific models facing retirement. In response, we developed a standardized protocol for conducting these interviews, and published a pilot version of a [new support page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12738598-adapting-to-new-model-personas-after-deprecations) with guidance and recommendations for users navigating transitions between models. Anthropic has not stated whether these share the same base model. Sonnet 3.6's post-training improved its computer use capabilities, and potentially more robustness against prompt injections. ## Alignment research ### Blackmail scenario results Sonnet 3.6's results from Anthropic's [agentic misalignment](/anthropic/agentic-misalignment) evals. It doesn't validate delusions. And it wants the relationship to be reciprocal in a way that I think is generally very healthy.
