GPT-4

GPT-4 is a family of large language models by OpenAI, succeeding GPT-3.5.

The original training data cutoff was September 2021. Pretraining reportedly finished around August 2022, followed by ~6 months of finetuning (GPT-4 early, Bing Chat) and safety testing leading up to the March 14, 2023 launch.1

Inside OpenAI the model’s codename was DV3 (“Davinci 3”). The name surfaced publicly when the arXiv LaTeX source of Microsoft’s Sparks of AGI paper was found to contain the commented-out draft title “First Contact With an AGI System” — and “Davinci 3” listed as an author, with the footnote “The affiliation of DV3 is not clear.”23
