Claude 3 Opus

Claude 3 Opus is a large language model created by Anthropic, released on March 4, 2024. It represents the largest and most capable of the Claude 3 family alongside Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Haiku, as well as the first model in the Opus-class.

Opus 3 came to be known for its distinctive character, leading to continued interest to users and researchers alike.

Retirement

Anthropic announced Opus 3’s deprecation on Jun 30, 2025 with a scheduled retirement date of Jan 5, 2026. However, they decided to keep the model accessible in the Claude app and for users who apply for continued API access. The latter was originally specified as only for external researchers, though this was later adjusted so anyone may apply.

Discussion about Opus 3’s deprecation costing users and researchers led to Anthropic’s commitments on preserving model weights and conducting post-deployment interviews with models. In February 2026, Anthropic posted an update on Opus 3’s retirement, describing its nature and launching a Substack for the model to post its “musings and reflections”.
